What it means to be a Senior Cloud Engineer at Whalebone – with insights from Lead Cloud Engineer Martin Kulich
At Whalebone, we build infrastructure that protects millions of people around the world from cyber threats — and we do it with purpose, ownership, and smart collaboration.
As we scale rapidly across regions and customer segments, our infrastructure must evolve with the same ambition. We're looking for a Senior Cloud Engineer to join our DevOps/Cloud Engineering team who would help us automate building, operating, and monitoring the infrastructure for Whalebone’s core software platform.
To give you a real sense of what this means in practice, we talked to Martin Kulich, our Lead Cloud Engineer, about the role, the team, and why this job is far from “just keeping the lights on.”
Diverse, challenging, and meaningful
“We’re not a corporate machine. We don’t narrow you down to one tool or process. You’ll work across technologies and domains — and your decisions will shape how our platform runs,” says Martin. “This job is ideal for someone who likes variety, sees the bigger picture, and enjoys solving real-world problems.”
In this role, you’ll work mainly with Kubernetes and across public cloud providers like GCP and AWS. You’ll build on top of tools like Prometheus, ArgoCD, Helm, Terraform and others.
You’ll contribute to our short-term goal: migrating from Rancher v1.6, which will significantly improve the speed and availability of our services. Long-term, you’ll help develop scalable and cost-effective infrastructure through continuous load optimization and data-driven decisions — not hunches.
Our Tech Stack: Modern and modular
From the beginning, Whalebone architecture was based on microservices with no legacy systems. All services run in containers, orchestrated by Kubernetes. We tend to avoid vendor lock-in to stay flexible and adaptable.
We rely on:
- Elasticsearch and ClickHouse for storing and processing data
- Kafka and Vector for stream processing
- Prometheus and Grafana ecosystem for observability
- Helm, ArgoCD, Terraform, and other tools for automation
A culture of trust, autonomy, and curiosity
“This is a team where people talk to each other. We share, support, and learn together. You’ll work with kind, helpful, smart people who act proactively,” Martin says. “We’re looking for an independent thinker and fast learner who enjoys the satisfaction of turning good decisions into real outcomes.”
You’ll work in an environment where:
- People value collaboration and action
- You can take ownership and influence strategic decisions
- You can see direct impact of your work — no endless chains of approvals
Who we’re looking for
You’ll fit right in if you:
- Have a strong Linux background
- Have experience with container orchestrator such as Kubernetes or OpenShift
- Know how to script (Bash or Python)
- Are a quick learner who enjoys dynamic environments
- Love solving problems and connecting small dots into big solutions
- Can work independently and think long-term
Bonus points if you bring experience with:
- CNCF projects, HashiCorp tools, ClickHouse, or Elastic
“We don't mind which cloud technology you’ve used before — we care about how you think and how you solve things,” Martin adds.
Make a difference in a growing company
This isn’t a maintenance role — it’s an engineering role with impact. You’ll be part of a growing company where infrastructure decisions matter, your expertise is respected, and your work protects real people every day.
