MTN Ghana, the country's leading mobile network operator, is bringing network-level cybersecurity to its customers with the launch of MTN WebGuard, powered by Whalebone Aura and delivered in collaboration with local market partner Across Network Technologies (Antcellular).
WebGuard is MTN Ghana's first network security product, marking a meaningful step in how the operator protects its customers online. Rather than asking subscribers to install anything, WebGuard works directly on the network – blocking phishing sites, malware, scam domains, and other online threats before they ever reach a customer's device.

A phased rollout, starting with home broadband
The launch begins with MTN Ghana's home broadband customers, a base of more than 176,000 households. Phase two will extend WebGuard to MTN Ghana's mobile customers, opening protection to a potential audience of over 20 million subscribers across the country.
This sequencing lets MTN Ghana refine the customer experience on a focused base before scaling WebGuard to one of the largest mobile audiences in West Africa.
Speaking on the launch, Nsroma Delanyo Amoateng, Manager E-Verticals at MTN Ghana, said the introduction of WebGuard demonstrates MTN Ghana’s commitment to going beyond providing connectivity to delivering meaningful digital solutions that protect customers in an increasingly connected world.
“At MTN, we are committed to enabling the benefits of a modern connected life while ensuring our customers can enjoy those experiences safely. WebGuard is a premium layer of protection designed to help keep families safe online by protecting their home internet from fake links, scam websites and other online threats. We are delighted to give our Home Broadband customers complimentary access to this service during this introductory phase, so they can experience its value first-hand. The protection works automatically, giving customers greater peace of mind without requiring any additional setup,” she said.
Built for the way Ghanaians actually go online
The threats Ghanaian internet users face today – phishing campaigns, fraudulent links shared over messaging apps, malicious sites posing as banks or delivery services – are the kind that no antivirus on a single device can fully handle. WebGuard moves protection upstream, to the network itself, so every connected device in a home or on a SIM is covered by default once the service is activated.
For customers, that means no apps to download, no settings to configure, and no technical knowledge required. Protection is on, quietly, in the background.
Localized Threat Intelligence, Scalable Protection
Cyber threats do not look the same in every part of the world. That is why Whalebone’s approach to threat intelligence goes far beyond global data feeds. Thanks to the collaboration with local CERTs and AI-driven analysis of DNS and internet metadata, Whalebone identifies threat patterns that are specific to local environments – uncovering phishing campaigns, malware domains, and social engineering tactics that would otherwise go unnoticed.
With the highest number of telco mass-market cybersecurity deployments, Whalebone provides comprehensive support to telco partners through its Telco Cybersecurity Success Program. This structured approach ensures that MTN WebGuard is seamlessly integrated into MTN Ghana's existing services, offering users an effortless and secure online experience while generating a new revenue stream for the telco.
